We got back home from Austin today and the first thing I did was finish the glaze on the grisaille stage. Remember in this monochrome stage I used only Raw Umber, White, and Cold Black. The glaze is Original Liquin with Bohemian Green thoroughly mixed in. The concentration on this stage is light and dark.
In tomorrow's class we will concentrate on Warm/Cool stage. If you're doing a portrait it's called the "Dead" color stage for reasons that will become obvious. The plan in the Warm/Cool stage is to use the Red, Blue, and White you've chosen for your painting. The painting I'm doing has very little red in it so I will experiment with greens and Alizarin Crimson for my warm areas and probably Ultramarine Blue for my cool areas. Crimson and Ultramarine make a beautiful almost black purple that should be a great complement to the greens in the painting. A goal in this stage is to use the minimum amount of yellow. I'm looking forward to seeing your masterpieces tomorrow.
Yellow will be the main component in the final stage next week when your painting will come ALIVE!
